Fulbright to India Guide

Departure Checklists

Housing Check-out

Please make sure to settle all formalities and move out from your rental accommodation as per the date specified in the signed lease agreement. If you plan to continue your stay, get in touch with your landlord and agree on a new move-out date in writing. Before vacating the rental accommodation, please ensure that everything is left in order. The property should be left clean and undamaged. The landlords may charge for damages to a property caused by the tenant’s negligence or misuse. So, please arrange a final inspection with your landlord and ensure a departure inventory is signed. Also, discharge any remaining payments or closures related to electricity service, internet connections, water bills etc.

Cancellation of phone services

If you have a post-paid connection, reach out to your mobile service provider (such as Airtel, Jio, Vodafone, etc.) to confirm that your plan is terminated on time, preventing any charges after you leave.

Bank Account

If you have opened a Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) Bank account in India, it is important that you close your bank account before departing from India and make sure all pending payments are cleared before doing so. You may also choose to keep your bank account open in case you plan on returning to India in the future for travel or studies after consulting with the designated bank where you have opened account.

Submission of reports and receipts to USIEF

Before departing, please submit all the required reports (mid-term and final) and reimbursement receipts (if any) to USIEF.  All final adjustments including payment of excess baggage allowance will be withheld until the satisfactorily completed final report is received at USIEF, even if this follows the grantee’s return to the United States. All final reports are expected to be filed within two months of grant completion in order to receive final payment.

Notifying your affiliating institution

Please inform your host institution, supervisor, and colleagues about your plans to return to the U.S. and the completion of your Fulbright-Nehru grant in India. Complete all the mandatory formalities, paperwork, and processes before departing. It’s also thoughtful to express your appreciation for their support and send a small note of thanks, as this helps fosters future partnerships and maintain positive relationships.
